National Trust Lends Support to Ellensburg Downtown Association Efforts
The Ellensburg Downtown Association has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Eldridge Campbell Stockton Memorial Preservation Fund for the State of Washington. The seed grant funds will be used to hire a consultant team to develop a template of preservation appropriate code compliance solutions for use by local building officials to help facilitate the restoration and rehabilitation of historic buildings in downtown Ellensburg (1890s-1920s National Historic District). The consultant team will initially identify the code compliance issues for six historic buildings slated for rehabilitation or restoration in 2008. The team will then compile the list of potential solutions .which will be presented to the City of Ellensburg. When completed the project will provide the City building department with a new tool to more easily evaluate and permit future preservation projects.
In announcing the grant, National Trust President, Richard Moe said, “With these start up dollars, the Ellensburg Downtown Association joins hundreds of other communities and organizations across the country actively ensuring that America’s architectural and cultural heritage is preserved.”
The Eldridge Campbell Stockton Memorial Preservation Fund was established in 1993 by Alice Stockton Konze in memory of her brother who died in service to his country during World War II. The Eldridge Campbell Stockton Memorial Preservation Fund encourages grassroots preservation of the rich architectural and historic resources in the state of Washington. The Eldridge Campbell Stockton Memorial Preservation Fund is one of the funding sources for the National Trust Preservation Fund (NTPF). Competitive funding rounds are held three times annually for the NTPF program, which dispenses small grants to local projects. Funding amounts range form $1,000 to $5,000 and are awarded to non profit groups and public agencies and must be matched at least dollar-for-dollar with public or private funds. The City of Ellensburg earlier this year allocated $20,000 to cover the remaining costs of the Code Compliance Template project. Ellensburg Mayor, Nancy Lillquist, said "The City Council is excited to be a part of this partnership helping to create an environment that encourages and supports the continued revitalization of Downtown Ellensburg. A healthy downtown is one of our top priorities".
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a non profit membership organization chartered by Congress to encourage public participation in all aspects of historic preservation.
